Why Natural Hair Gets Dry and How to Fix It

If you have natural hair, you already know the feeling. You moisturise in the morning and by evening your hair feels dry again. It can be frustrating, but dryness is one of the most common struggles for natural hair.

Why Does It Happen?

Natural hair is shaped in curls and coils. That shape makes it harder for your scalp’s natural oils to travel down the strands. The tighter the curl, the harder it is for those oils to coat your hair. Add in Ghana’s hot weather, harmattan winds, or protective styles that stay in for weeks and dryness shows up even more.

Dryness can also be a sign that your hair products are not sealing in enough moisture or that you are washing with shampoos that strip too much.

How to Fix It

The good news is that dryness is not permanent. A few simple changes to your routine can make a big difference.

  • Cleanse gently so your hair is not stripped of its natural oils

  • Always follow with a moisturiser and then seal it in with an oil or butter

  • Deep condition often to restore softness and hydration

  • Take care of your scalp because a healthy scalp supports healthy strands

  • Protect your hair at night with satin or silk

Moisture is the Foundation

When your hair is well moisturised everything else becomes easier. Styling looks better, growth is supported and breakage reduces. Dryness may be common but with the right habits you can keep your curls soft, hydrated and healthy.
